Etching

Etching (diamond etching) is a lettering technique that is ideal for designs requiring great detail. Using a number of different tools, our company artist is able to give maximum detail and contrast that was previously not possible with sandblasting alone. This allows desired designs to be reduced in size yet still maintain the characteristics for which they were chosen.

Diamond etching often times gives the viewer the impression of a black and white photograph. When maximum detail in a minimum amount of used space is required, etching is the answer.

Sandblasting

The most predominantly visible lettering technique in use is sandblasting. It provides a number of different contrasts through it’s use of different blasting medias. This lettering allows memorials previously placed in cemeteries to be lettered with additional lettering using portable equipment on location.

At Jefferson Monument Works, we do our own sandblasting, allowing us to maintain maximum quality control.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving is a relatively new process in the industry. While it is unique, it also presents challenges. Using a high intensity beam of light, it is able to provide definition that sandblasting and diamond etching can’t.

It is an excellent choice for engraving portraits and other designs. However, it is not well suited for lettering. As the equipment is not portable, all lettering must be done at once and in a very controlled environment. Lettering on site in a cemetery is not possible at this time.
